Hair of the Dog

Hair of the Dog

A recent study by German researchers has added more weight to the theory that exposure to pets can have a protective effect against allergies.

The study took place over six years and included over 9000 children and found that growing up with pets can train a child's immune system to be less sensitive to triggers causing asthma, allergies and eczema. The same effect was not found in children who had frequent contact with dogs but didn't have one at home.

Scientist believe it is beneficial for children to receive early exposure to  the germs carried into the house by pets because this helps their immune systems develop.

Yet another way that dogs help improve our quality of life.

Royal Dogs

This month we celebrate the Queen's Birthday with a well deserved long weekend. And in case you thought you had nothing in common with the Queen, you'll be happy to hear she's a dog lover too!

The Queen is well known for her love of dogs, especially Corgis. Her first Corgi was a gift from her parents when she was a child, his name was "Dookie."

While the Corgi is by far her favorite breed, the Queen is also fond of other breeds including the Tibetan Spaniel, Cocker Spaniels and Labradors.

She currently owns five Corgis and four Dorgis (Corgis crossed with a Dachshund).
